For cryo-TEM preparation of lithium metal anode, a lacey carbon TEM grid was put on Cu foil working electrode and assembled into LiǁCu cells in an argon-filled glovebox. The cells were discharged at a constant current density of 1.0 mA cm −2 for 15 min, after which the TEM grid was taken out by disassembling the cells for measurement. O in the CEI layer shows a bonding that is similar to organic polymer carbonate compositions 34 (Fig. 4f), which is most likely the result of DFOB - decomposition 35. With a peak around 290 eV in C K-edge EELS spectra, the formation of carbonate bonds in the CEI layer is further supported (Fig. 4g).
