To help with this, I have created an Aquarium Substrate Calculator. You can enter the dimensions of your aquarium and the desired depth of substrate, and it will calculate the volume of substrate you will need. I have made things uniform by making all volume calculations in Liters. One thing to note is the first user input to select a preference for inches or centimeters. Fluval Stratum will only last for a couple of years – two to three years. Even if you handle it with added care, the particles will slowly disintegrate so you will be left with no choice but to make replacements soon after. Can You Reuse Fluval Stratum?

It does come with its minuses, such as increased costs, poor anchoring characteristics for newly-added plants, and extreme fragility. Cloudy Fluval stratum waters won’t kill your fish, but you should wait until the water clears up before adding the tank inhabitants.I used a combination of Plant and Shrimp in my first fully planted tank, it worked very successfully. However I found it to be a nightmare to plant shallow in it as it is a very light medium and high tank flow or fish would easily uproot plants, planting deeper improved the situation. It's a brittle substrate and If it dries out it is extremely friable (think rice crispies) and goes to dust. Even when wet the mechanics of deep planting can easily crush it so you have to be gentle with it.
