The Football Annual was a reference work published annually from 1868 to 1908. It reported on the various codes of football played in England, and also provided some coverage of the other home nations, supplemented on occasion by reports from around the world. While association and rugby football provided its main focus, it also included some material on public school football, Sheffield football (until that code merged with association football in 1877), and, on occasion, even Australian and American football. A typical issue would include laws of the various codes, a summary of the preceding season, a listing of football clubs in England (including such details as each club's ground, secretary, and colours), and essays about aspects of the game. All prospective bidders are encouraged to attend the exhibition and view lots in person. If this is not possible, however, we will be pleased to provide condition reports on lots where practical. All condition reports are provided in good faith. Buyers are reminded that it is their responsibility to satisfy themselves over the condition of lots (refer to Conditions of Business paragraphs 3 a & b).
One publication appearing for the first time that year eventually established an unrivalled reputation for in-depth factual information and football trivia of the Sherwin variety. Former editor ERIC BROWN reveals a threat to the world’s oldest football annual and takes a look at the 136th edition of a publication originally launched during Queen Victoria’s reign.Launching a mini-football annual known as The Athletic News Football Supplement and Club Directory must have been a considerable gamble with international and FA Cup football still in their infancy and plans for organised national league football still at discussion stage. Queen Victoria occupied the throne and the Marquess of Salisbury was having a second go at being Prime Minister though it is not recorded whether either of them celebrated Sherwin’s and England’s triumph.
All lots are subject to reserves. The reserve price is never set higher than the low pre-sale estimate. This publication first appeared in 1887, produced by the Athletic News as a rival to the Football Annual. Like the older publication, it initially aimed to provided coverage of all football codes popular in England, including rugby football (both rugby union and rugby league after the codes split) in addition to association football. The final edition to date was published in the summer of 2022 for the 2022-23 season, as no deal could be agreed between the authors and prospective publishers for the 2023-24 edition. Following the withdrawal of News of the World as sponsors, the Nationwide Building Society emerged to provide new sponsorship in 2008. This sponsorship lasted for two years, with the title Nationwide Football Annual being retained after the end of the sponsorship.
The 2021-22 season saw record investment into the women’s and girls’ game, culminating in England Women’s historic UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 victory at Wembley Stadium. This major tournament success has provided a strong platform for unprecedented growth and a legacy programme that has seen over 7,000 more women and girls playing football throughout the host cities. In partnership with Barclays, the FA helped to deliver the inaugural Biggest Ever Football Session with over 90,000 schoolgirls playing football as part of the Let Girls Play campaign. The FA remains focused on working with Government to ensure that girls can play football in every school across the country. The year 1887 will be remembered, among many other things, as the year a number 11 batsman finished top of the batting averages as England won The Ashes in Australia. During this period, the FA made strong progress against the key objectives within its four-year Time For Change strategy, supporting its ambition to be a force for good throughout English football and in society.Estimates are published as a guide only and are subject to review.
