IKEA Wood Dowel x10 Pack (IKEA Part #101375)
About this deal
Generally I just get a piece of scrap wood that is at least 1/2" thick and then clamp or hole it such that the hole lines up with the cut off dowel. However, if you’re moving or simply need to take your IKEA furniture apart for some reason, removing the wooden dowels is possible with a little effort.

I don’t have a set of pliers and even if I did I’m afraid they would break the dowel, any advice on removing one of these stubborn pieces? Initially I was working on one dowel at a time and it was taking a very long time, I found better optimization later on in the project. This IKEA hack adds considerable bulk to the cabinet front which can get stuck while opening/ closing the HEMNES shoe cabinet. The wedge dowel that Anders and Göran invented together is a solution that may not blow your mind visually, but from an innovation perspective it’s rather fantastic. I've used L brackets and shelf brackets to provide additional stiffness, and they can be salvaged when the "wood" finally disintegrates.

If you're unable to remove a dowel by hand use a pair of pliers to get more leverage and the dowel should come straight out. The following spare parts are available (if present in original product): door, door hinge and seals, other seals, door locking assembly and plastic peripherals such as detergent dispensers.
The glue doesn't just lie between the surfaces (as some adhesives on some surfaces will do) because wood is porous and the glue soaks in (I am sure there is a technical term for that), and I think the dowels, which are often tight-fitting to begin with (by design) may even swell just a little bit from the water in the glue. That may leave 1/2 a dowel in a hole, but that's OK because these dowels are not critical in and of themselves. The notion of non-visible fittings enhanced the elegant gazelle, and the wedge dowel was a given in the collection.
